All the terms mentioned above are the same meaning, but the way is different, as explained by J. Martin (1991:45) in his book Human Relation for the Hospital Industry that:

"The Front desk of a hotel or motel is usually the primary nexus between guest and hotel or Moter. The person working the front desk, whatever the job title-front desk clerk, receptionist, guess seruvuce Agent-is a person who might and checks the guest in and out, keeps records by hand or computer, relates to the housekeeping and other departments, and Generally operates an information and record center  ".

Further Robert. J. Martin, provides a definition of the receptionist/Desk Clerk, as follows:

"Desk clerk in hotels or motels are often the first people to greet incoming guest. They register the Guest. They register the Guest, assign a room to them, issue the room key, and often provide information about services available in the hotel and in the community.

Based on Robert J. Martin's opinion, it is clear that any term used to refer to the reception, he is someone who works or serves in the front of the Hotel.

What is Desk Clerk?

Desk Clerk is the person or officer who first welcomes and greetings to every guest who comes to the hotel. A receptionist will then register guests, to make a room that is ready to be occupied by the guest either on the advice or request from the guest itself, giving or removing the room key.

A front desk must also provide information for hotel guests relating to the services or facilities available at the hotel as well as other information outside the hotel. In a hotel big or small, we see that the task of a receptionist is very complex. This is to be a double or multiple task to be received.

For example, in a small hotel, a Desk Clerk also becomes a cashier, a telephone operator, handles reservations and provides information. With the development of technology, where the task of someone who used to be done manually, is not impossible in the millennial century all these tasks can be handled by a sophisticated computer.

So does this now happen to the hotel industry. Once in a big hotel we meet many officers, such as: reception, information providers, cashier officers, room reservation officers, and others. But nowadays, so many tasks in a large hotel is quite in the handle by a Desk Clerk only. This is possible because in the hotel all the guest data process is supported by computerization. Therefore, Desk Clerk is required to work professionally.

While Renner (1981:114) in his book Basic Hotel Front Office Procedures, explains that:

"The first contact with The Hotel personnel may be a doorman or bellman, but most likely, it will be a Desk Clerk. He is the prime representative of the hotel, the management and all other employed working for it. The first impression will make all the difference in how the guest will view the hotel and subsequently enjoy their stay; They will then make the establishment.  "

Conclusion

From Renner's opinion, it can be said that the guest could first relate to the party with a doorman or bellboy, but most of the time is a guest related to the Desk Clerk. He is the main representative of the hotel, management, and all employees working in the hotel. The first impression will affect the guest's view of the hotel to enjoy a visit or a stay at the hotel.
